Introduction to Eremophilas
The Genus Eremophila comprises of a group plants that can be found growing in the arid regions of Australia’s mainland states and as such most have evolved to survive on a minimum of water.
Eremophilas have been cultivated for many years but in recent times they have started to become more popular in home gardens both in Australia and other parts of the world including the USA.
The increasing popularity of Eremophilas can be attributed to the fact that many home gardeners and enthusiasts are nowadays discovering just how garden worthy many of the Eremophila species and cultivars actually are. As a consequence Eremophilas are now migrating from being a plant that was once only found in specialist plant nurseries to a plant the is now more readily available in a larger range of nurseries. If you are a collector though, you will have visit specialist nurseries to find a much greater range as there are many new species and cultivars emerging all the time.
This is also one of the features of Eremophilas, the fact that they come in such a wide and varied range of flower and foliage, colours and shapes. They also vary in size from very prostrate ground covers to small to medium shrubby trees and all shapes and sizes in between.
Different species of Eremophila also have a wide and varied range of preferred soil conditions which range from well drained gravels and sand to heavy clay which floods when it rains and then dries out during drought so no matter what your garden situation there will be a selection of Eremophilas to suit your garden soil.
So if you’re new to Eremophilas keep an eye out for them when next you’re at your local nursery. Most are extremely drought tolerant, flower prolifically and are adaptable to most garden conditions.
